LowE

You probably have heard the term LowE- that stands for low emissivity. It’s a coding put on the inner part of the exterior window pane to reflect light and heat back out. It keeps whatever the climate is inside the house inside and the climate outside, outside.

Argon Gas

Argon gas is another way of insulating the window sashes. Argon gas is heavier than air which is inserted after air is vacuumed out between the panes. If you want to meet energy star requirements in the southern region you really need to have the LowE coding on the glass and the Argon gas.

Foam Filled Frames

Another option that we have to make a window more insulated is foam filled frames – in the master frame of the window and also the sash frames. This is really going to be more beneficial for colder climates. It’s hot here in Georgia so it’s not a must have in terms of energy efficiency but always an additional option if you want more insulation.

Triple Pane Windows

Triple pane is another option. Triple pane windows would really only be needed for sound reduction in the southern region. Don’t be over sold on the energy efficiency of triple pane in hotter climates. The only benefit in Georgia for triple pane, in my opinion is for sound reduction. Triple pane is a great option for sound reduction in homes that are in high traffic areas.

We know there are a lot of options and we try to make this a simple process for you! You really only need double pane with LowE and Argon Gas filled panes. This is what we build into all of our windows at The Window Source Atlanta. Dont get overwhelmed! We can show you a demonstration and make the process extremely simple. For a free demonstration on energy effecient replacement windows, give us a call 470-275-5159.

Vinyl Windows or Fiberglass Windows? https://thewindowsourceofcentraliowa.com/2018/09/25/vinyl-windows-or-fiberglass-windows/ Tue, 25 Sep 2018 11:18:38 +0000 http://windowsourceatlanta.com/?p=17194 The post Vinyl Windows or Fiberglass Windows? appeared first on Window Source of Central Iowa.

Vinyl Replacement Windows vs. Fiberglass Replacement Windows

Shopping for replacement windows can be a bit overwhelming. We see this all the time. Customers who buy today but were in the market 3 or 4 years ago. What caused the delay? Most say they pushed the project off to research and try to find out what really suits their needs. Unfortunately, most companies send out a salesman who will tell you the product they offer is the best fit for you, no matter what the case. This leaves consumers feeling confused and overwhelmed.

One of the most common questions asked is, “should I replace my old windows with vinyl or fiberglass?”

Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Replacement Windows

Lets check out the pros and cons of both fiberglass and vinyl windows so that you can make an informed decision.

Vinyl Windows Pros

  • Vinyl windows do not require as much maintenance as they do not need to be painted. Even if scratched, virgin vinyl windows are the same color throughout.
  • Vinyl windows are designed with multiple chambers filled with foam that helps to insulate the frame.
  • Vinyl windows also have fusion welded frames so there is no possibility for air or water leaks around the frame and sash.
  • Vinyl windows can be manufactured quickly and easily.  Most can be custom manufactured and delivered within 2-3 weeks. They can be made in custom sizes to fit any opening exactly.
  • Vinyl windows are the best option when it comes to energy savings at the most affordable price.

Vinyl Windows Cons

  • Homeowners sometimes believe vinyl is a cheap product because of the reputation of builder grade vinyl windows, so they steer clear of the “cheap look”.
  • Vinyl windows can expand and contract with temperature changes causing the seal between the vinyl framework and the glass to fail. Although most vinyl window companies offer a lifetime warranty on vinyl windows.
  • Although vinyl windows come in multiple colors, once you have chosen the color of your window, it is not recommended to paint the vinyl if you want to change the color scheme.

Fiberglass Windows Pros

  • Fiberglass as a material has more strength than vinyl, some fiberglass windows can be up to 9 times stronger than vinyl windows.
  • Fiberglass is composed of glass fibers and a composite sand material which are better able to expand and contract as the weather changes allowing it to maintain its integrity.
  • Fiberglass is made from silica sand which is a natural resource. Making fiberglass is a more eco friendly option that vinyl.

Fiberglass Windows Cons

  • Fiberglass windows are not the maintenance free option. They will require painting after a few years.
  • Fiberglass windows are painted. This means if the window is scratched or chipped during installation or due to Mother Nature, you will have to try to match the paint color to touch up.
  •  Fiberglass windows offer less insulation, in some cases 3 times less, than vinyl windows.
  • Over the years, fiberglass can weaken at the corners and let in more air, water and dust.
  • Fiberglass windows tend to cost 10-30% more than vinyl replacement replacement windows.
  •  Most fiberglass windows do not come with a lifetime warranty.

In summary, when is comes to vinyl vs fiberglass you need to ask yourself these 3 questions.

1. Are you willing to pay 10- 30% more for replacement windows that are made of a stronger material?
2. Do you want a completely maintenance free replacement window?
3. Do you want replacement windows that come with a lifetime warranty?

We hope this helps with choosing the right replacement window for your home. Whether it be vinyl replacement windows or fiberglass replacement windows, your on the right path to choosing a more efficient window for your home which can save you energy, time, and money in the long run.

If you have any questions about replacement windows, feel free to give us a call at The Window Source Atlanta. We can give you a quick estimate right over the phone 470-275-5159

Window Installers: Sub Contractor vs. Employee

Did you know the majority of replacement window companies use sub contractors for their installation process? There are pros and cons to both subs and employee installers. Let’s weigh out the pros and cons.

Pros and Cons – Subcontractors

The pros of using subcontractors for your window installation is that typically sub contractors are paid by window until installed. This means they are ready to get in and out fast! The benefit for window replacement companies is the windows are installed quickly- in term, the payment is delivered quickly. This is a plus for window replacement companies because you receive your payment quickly. This is also a plus for customers who may be on time straits and want the job done quickly.

The down fall to using subcontractors is the quality. Like I mentioned, the faster the better for subcontractors. They get paid and are ready to move on to the next job. Fast doesn’t always mean you will get the best quality. It all depends on the subcontractors a company uses. If the customer is not happy with their window installation, the issues fall back on the window replacement company, not the sub contractor.

Pros and Cons- Employees

Now let’s talk employee based window installers. Employees will always be loyal to the company they work for. Window replacement companies see a huge decrease in cancellations or rescheduling installations when their installers are on payroll. Quality is top notch because of the fact that an employee installer takes his time. Being on a salary, there is no need to rush a job. They also know that if the installation is not up to par, they will be the ones making the trip back out to the customer to fix any unsatisfactory work. In short- customer experience seems to be at its best when the companies window installation crews are employees.

The downfall to having employees as window installers is the cost for the window company. Employees require payroll and tax expense, fuel cost, and sometimes may require a company vehicle. There is really no negative aspects for the customer. Customers will get quality work and work with someone who represents a company with pride.

What Do You Prefer?

The last person a customer communicates with after purchasing new windows is typically the installation crew. Would you rather deal with a subcontractor who may have been chosen from a list of 20+ installers and sent to work inside your home? Many of the window companies who use subs, choose who will do certain installations based on availability. After all, subs go from one company to another in search for work. This means the person coming into your home may be randomly picked from a list and sent to your home. Will you get the best or the bottom of the bucket?

There are situations where window replacement companies who have salary based employees have to bring in sub contractors based on demand. If work is slow, you can’t just fire employees and bring them back when work picks up. The Window Source Atlanta is transitioning to this employee based installer process. We prefer to pay a little more for quality and loyalty. When demand is heightened we do use subcontractors. Our subcontractors are top notch and have been working with our company for years. We just understand we have to work around their schedules.

If you are in the market for replacement windows, consider asking these 3 questions.

  • First, ask yourself what you would prefer. Fast installation or quality installation?

  • Ask the window company if they use sub or employees for their projects.

  • If the company does use sub contractors, ask for references so that you know their work is top notch.

Installation is key to the success of our company and reputation. Subcontractor or employee – The Window Source Atlanta only uses the best. So that you are guaranteed quality installation.

You may have heard the statement before, energy efficient windows pay for themselves. We all know energy efficient windows can save you money on your energy bill. But can investing in replacement windows really save you that much energy cost, where you actually have a return on your investment- or at least break even?

The Numbers

Let’s break it down with real numbers and find out if energy efficient windows can really pay for themselves. Say you have 10 single pane windows and you upgrade to double-pane windows with an Energy Star U-Factor rating of .28. The official savings statement released by Energy Star states that you will save an average of $478 per year or an average of $40 per month – in the Atlanta area.

The average investment you will make by replacing 10 windows with our 3000 series energy star windows from The Window Source of Atlanta is around $3300. This does not include options that you may need; such as, capping, grid patterns, or upgrading to different color options. But if we are just talking energy investment vs energy loss – it’s a start.

Monthly payment vs. Energy Savings

Now, you have plenty of options when it comes to paying for the windows- finance interests free, equal monthly payments with a low interest rate, or pay in full with cash.

Financing with Interest

You’ve got great credit- why would you pay interest? Maybe you want low monthly payments and your willing to pay a little interest to have the freedom to pay off the loan when you feel the time is right. Let’s say you choose The Window Source if Atlanta’s financing option where you are willing to pay an interest rate of 3.9% and make equal monthly payments until you have the windows paid off. Equal monthly payments meaning 1.75% of the total $3300, each month.

Pros- Your monthly investment each month would be $57.75 vs. your monthly energy savings of $40 per month. Your out of pocket cost is $17.75 until your windows are paid off. Not bad- you could think of this as paying only under $20 a month for new energy star windows if your taking in account the savings on your energy cost.

Cons- Your paying an interest rate of 3.9% which you will pay until the windows are paid off. In short- if you only pay the minimum required monthly payment it will take right at 5 years to pay off your windows.

Financing interest free

You’ve got great credit- Your going at this interest free. You choose The Window Source of Atlanta’s 18 months interest free financing option.

Pros- your paying interest free and still saving on your energy cost. Your monthly payment is $183.30. Your monthly investment each month would be $183.30 vs. your monthly energy savings of $40 per month. If you account for the energy savings – your out of pocket cost is $143.

Cons- It’s going to take 18 months to start seeing the savings without a payment.

Pay with Cash

Payment aren’t for you and you have the cash ready to invest in energy efficient windows. You pay $3300 for your 10 3000 series energy star certified windows.

Pros- You’ve paid upfront and your saving $40 a month on your energy bills.

Cons- It will take about 7 years to make up for the $3300 investment you made in your windows.

The Opposition

Now let’s take into account that you may have paid more than $3300 for 10 energy efficient windows. You may need exterior window capping or bronze colored windows which will increase the total investment cost.  Also, this cost analysis is only based on single pane windows, upgraded to energy efficient windows. If you already have double-pane windows that are being replaced you can ‘throw this out the window’. Upgrading from double pane or new construction windows to energy efficient windows will still help with saving on energy cost- but only about $60 per year. You may also live in a different area of the country where energy savings are not as ample.

So- can energy efficient windows really pay for themselves? Yes and no. The numbers don’t lie. In a perfect world, over time you could recoup the money you invest in energy efficient windows.

The $189 Window

You see it all time. Window replacement companies advertising replacement windows for under $200. $189 installed with a lifetime warranty. So you do the math – 10 windows x $189 = $1890. That’s affordable. Seems almost too good to be true, right? That’s because it is. This form of advertising is called bait and switch. Bait and switch scams appeal to people who want to save money. A company offers a great deal, to draw customers to the business. When the customer contacts the business, they find that the deal is not available and the company then tries to convince the customer to buy something else, assuring them that they are still receiving a good deal.

How Window Companies Use Bait and Switch

Window companies advertise their base price window at $179 or $189 to get in your door. The slicked up salesmen comes in with a completely different approach. You want energy star windows, correct? You need screens on your windows, right? Oh, and then there is shipping cost. Not to mention color options, capping, grid patterns. Once everything is added up your ten $189 windows went from under $2000 to over $5000.

The Window Source of Atlanta Approach

Don’t be fooled by false advertising. At The Window Source of Atlanta, we break down our prices so that you see exactly what you are getting. We would never sell you a window without it being Energy Star certified; therefore, we are not going to advertise our base price window. We give you facts, by advertising our best price guarantee and our instant price calculator. No hype here, just upfront pricing on the best vinyl replacement windows in the industry. Finding the best vinyl window company in Atlanta

Your windows are on their last leg, you have a budget set, now the search begins. How are you going to find the best vinyl window company in Atlanta to fit your needs and budget?

First, what is your definition of  the “best”? It may be simply the best price. It could be quality and price. It could even come down to who will offer the best customer experience.

Quality

Let’s talk vinyl window quality. You may have already done your research and know that most vinyl windows have slights pros and cons but overall the same basic functions. Double-hung, energy saving, and maintenance free. Assuming this is true, let’s mark that off the list.

Price

Now price. Vinyl replacement windows in Atlanta can range anywhere from $350-$1000 installed. Depending on the warranty and the company you are dealing with. Besides the vast difference in pricing, the quality and warranties don’t seem to vary. Most reputable window replacement companies will back their products with a lifetime warranty. Our philosophy is never pay more for the same thing. The products are the same, the warranty is the same so what’s all the hype with these $700-$1000 windows? Your guess is as good as ours. Price is a no brained, you should be between $350-$550/ window depending on the options you choose.

Customer Experience

Customer experience seems to be lost these days in the hustle of high pressure sales and the in and out sales experience that comes with replacement windows. Wouldn’t it feel good giving your money to a company who in return will take care of your every need, even after the installation is complete?

  • Is the sales experience enjoyable and informative or pushy and uncomfortable?
  • Does the company offer rewards programs for referring your friends and neighbors?
  • Will a project manager be on site at your installation to walk the job and make sure your expectations have been met?
  • Say you have service needs after installation. How easy is the process to file a service claim, are you able to simply file this on the company website?

These are all good questions to ask if your definition of “best” requires top notch customer experience. All companies claim to be the best but a google search can tell you a lot about a company before you even meet with someone. Google search “window replacement company near me reviews” or “window company near me complaints” . This will give you a glimpse of the type of customer experience you can expect from multiple window replacement companies.

If your searching for the best vinyl window company in Atlanta. Consider what “best” means to you. Quality products, fair pricing and excellent customer experience all make up our definition of “The Best Window Company in Atlanta”.

For information on The Window Source Atlanta’s vinyl windows, pricing and customer experience give us a call 470-275-5159 or schedule your free estimate.
